English Council Tax Rises Double Scottish

Since 1997 when Labour came to power, English council tax rises are double those in Scotland. Don’t think we should read too much into this, after all it is absed on house prices to a certain extent, and surely the government wouldn’t deliberately charge English tax payers more!

The Conservatives have claimed it is the ultimate stealth tax, as local councils get the blame. And criticism from government for tax rises, while at the same time the government sets their spending priorities and grants which fund them. That is a fair criticism. Give councils more financial freedom to raise what they spend, with less central government inteference.

  1. “Give councils more financial freedom to raise what they spend, with less central government inteference.”

    That’s so right!
