Jack Straw is Wrong on English Parliament

Jack Straw is opposed to an English parliament. For some very strange reasons.

I am wholly opposed to an English parliament. If you went down that route, there would be little advantage seen by those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for maintaining the Union, because the argument would be, what exactly is in it for us?

As well the English might ask now. There is in all this the underlying assumption that the Union must be preserved at all costs (David Cameron put it “better an imperfect marriage than a perfect divorce”). But why would an English parliament affect the Welsh and Scots so?

Take probably the simplest form of EP, a replica of the Scottish parliament, with the same devolved powers. For those in Scotland currently, the Scottish Parliament decides devoloved matters and the UK parliament reserved matters. With an English equivalent established, the Scottish Parliament would decide devolved matters and the UK parliament reserved matters. No change.

The difference is that English matters would only be decided by an English, not UK, body. So Scottish MPs could no longer influence internal English policy. Is this the supposed advantage Scottish and Welsh voters are sticking in the union for? Because surveys have shown most Scots support the English getting the same rights they do.

He believes the Union is to everyone’s advantage, but doesn’t spell out why. All I hear form Unionists is that an English Parliament would ‘damage the union’ but never the case for the Union. What advantages does it bring, to Scotland, Wales and England, spell it out if you are so sure Mr Straw. And you’ll have to do a better job than Gordon Brown’s ‘no England-only solution to climate change etc’ as he must no there is also ‘no Britain-only solution to climate change etc’.

As usual our politicians tell us English that we must put our own interests second to the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish. As usual we must be the ones letting the Scots, Welsh and Northen Irish see what is in it for them. 85% of the UK population lives in England, Mr Straw and their views matter too. I can safely copy your quote and say

I am wholly in favour of an English parliament. If you stay on the current route, there would be little advantage seen by those in England for maintaining the Union, because the argument would be, what exactly is in it for us?

  1. The present political situation ISN’T favourable to anyone; that’s the whole point.
People like Straw do not want a strong England OR strong scotland; they want a divided England and a divided scotland.
Can you see why Straw says what he does or not? Straw comes out with some jumped-up rubbish every now and again to keep us all at each other’s throats that’s all. It’s called divide and rule!
There is no real, grown-up, reason why the English and scottish cannot get along. It seems to me that outsiders keep stirring up trouble between the two nations.

  2. ..someone told me Jack Straws’ real name is Jacob Warts. I don’t think that’s too hysterically funny as despite disliking his party, I think he’s OK and ought to be leading a good opposition.
