Tourists – Welcome to the Regions

This map was seen at the Tourist Information Centre at an English international airport. It shows a Britain of nations and regions, but not the EU’s official ones. Still, nowhere on the map is England specified, apart from a side note about numbered English counties. If a visitor to England saw this, how would he know he was in England without some prior knowledge of the geo-political make up of the British Isles.

There are regional tourist offices, which is why the map is coloured the way it is, but it is symptomatic of a lack of recognition of England as a country, that the convenient administrative divisions were shown, and the thousand year old nation ignored.

Thankfully, just below was this:

From the people at Enjoy England.

(Apologies for the photos, they were taken on a phone and I can’t work out how to rotate them.

  1. The “regions” has become the official name for England amongst the political elite… All rather sinister.
