Quote of the Day

Asymmetric devolution backfired. It did not satisfy the Scots or Welsh. Albeit very slowly and gradually, it merely led the English to rediscover their own nationality in the way the non-English peoples of the United Kingdom had started to do 30 years earlier.

David Marquand on ten years of Labour


  1. Marquand? Ha! ha!
    Marquand became the subject of an oft-repeated put-down in the House of Commons, during Roy Jenkins’ farewell speech.

    Jenkins, who had difficulty pronouncing the letter r, had said “I leave this party without rancour”, whereupon Dennis Skinner heckled “I thought you were taking Marquand with you”.
