‘Allegiance Pledges and Britishness’ Links

This morning the (online) papers were full of comment and reaction to Lord Goldsmith’s citizenship review. I don’t think one of them was positive. Most picked up on was the Oath of Allegiance to the Queen. I am sure budget reports will take over so here are a few Britizenship links for those bored of the budget.

Nick Robinson for the Beeb and a selection of Reader’s Oaths mostly sarcastic.

The Guardian’s Simon Jenkins on Citizenship and voter apathy and Michael White on is Britishness Broken?.

The Telegraph has Dan Hannan writing a leader, not a blog, Alan Cochrane on Paul Murphy as Minister for Britishness, a suggestion that Britishness Day should be Trafalgar day.

The Times also invites us to write our own oath and Alice Miles calls it a British Farce.

The Independent has Mark Steel attacking the contradiction between allegiance to the Queen and Blair/Brown’s mantra of modernness earlier in their rule.

Even the Sun has a load of Celebrities giving their opinions on what Britain means. All of course are proud to be British, would the Sun show anyone else? Britishness day seemed slightly popular, the oath of allegiance less so.

Anyway, I stand by St George’s Day, the 23rd of April, as Englishness day.
