Rather than raising taxes to fund Labour’s spending, I mean investment, plans, Alistair Darling has announced plans to save the world using his magical super power of taxation.
He will save the world from global warming by increasing fuel duty by 2% and taxing ‘gas guzzlers’.
He will save us from killing ourselves binge drinking by increasing the cost of a pint by 4p.
He will save us from choking by forcing stores to introduce charges for plastic bags.
And by lucky co-incidence he will accidentally gain the power of £2.6bn extra, topped up by the highest borrowing ever to spend on (I mean invest in) throwing money at problems which have had money thrown at them for 11 years with no effect.
I am such a cynic.
