Deserved Win for Calzaghe

I know this is an English blog, but congratulations to Welshman Joe Calzaghe on rightly being named BBC Sport’s Personality of the Year. I was really surprised Lewis Hamilton (2nd) didn’t win, and I personally favoured Ricky Hatton (3rd), because in interviews he comes across as having a genuinely nice personality. Had he beaten Mayweather, I am sure he’d have won.But Calzaghe is a winner. 10 years as a world champion, unified all the belts in his weight division this year, after many years of trying. Boxing doesn’t get much coverage, hence why I am surprised he won. But it’s good to see a British sportsman celebrated for success. Hatton and Hamilton may have been gallant losers, but they still lost. So Calzaghe was the right choice. As was his dad, Enzo Calzaghe, as top coach. Also congratulations to gallant losers, the England rugby team, who won team of the year. We haven’t quite lost that trait of loving the underdog!

  1. He is not true Welsh, apart from the Italian connection, Joe was born in Hammersmith London,England. & lived in london for a couple of years, before his father moved thru work to Bridgend Wales…notice you dont see him with the welsh flag that often..

  2. Thanks for the info, I didn’t know he was English born. However he is generally considered Welsh as that’s where he grew up, and his mother is Welsh. Boxing is an individual sport though and I’ll still be backing him to beat Hopkins.
