Salmond speaks Sense again

Here the beeb reports that Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party and First Minister of the Scottish parliament is suggesting that the Westminster government gets rid of the Scottish Office. This follows complaints, some of which I mentioned previously, of the government treatment of the armed forces. Des Browne, is both Scottish and Defence Secretary.

Not only does Defence deserve a full time secretary, especially in a time of massive troop commitments, but Scotland hardly needs a secretary when it has its own parliament. The Scottish office is a relic of the pre-devolution days, but despite the new devolved administration, the office remains. There is still a Welsh Secretary and a Welsh assembly. There isn’t, nor has there been, an English Office, English Secretary or an English parliament.

  1. I’m really enjoying your blog – the whole system requires a realpolitik reality check!
