Friends, Britons, countrymen…

Friends, Britons, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury the EU constitution, not to praise it;
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones,
So let it be with the Constitution … The noble Brown
Hath told you the new reform treaty is not the consitution:
Here, under leave of Gordon and the rest,
(For Gordon is an honourable man;
So are they all; all honourable men)
Come I to speak in the Constitution’s funeral …
It was a fraud, unfaithful and unjust to me:
But Gordon says the new treaty is different;
And Gordon is an honourable man….
Valéry Giscard d’Estaing hath said “the proposals remain largely unchanged”,
Who benefitted from “cosmetic changes to the constitution to make it easier to swallow”:
Did this in the Reform treaty seem the same as the Constitution?
When that the people have voted against it, the Constitution hath disappeared:
The Constitution seems to be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Gordon says the new treaty is different;
And Gordon is an honourable man.
You all did hear Gisela Stuart call it “patently dishonest”
And the European Scrutiny Committee chairman said our safeguards would “leak like a sieve”
And Europolitics say “the new treaty and the dull Constitution are like two peas in a pod”
Once he presented us with a referendum,
Which he did then refuse: was this honour?
Yet Gordon says the new treaty is different;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Gordon spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
We all did reject the Constitution once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then to reject the Treaty?
O judgement! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason…. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with England,
And I must pause till it come back to me.
